“What do jazz, jambalaya, and a title search have in common?”
What do jazz, jambalaya, and a title search have in common?
Did you know, Louisiana has 64 parishes instead of counties. The reason goes back to its French and Spanish colonial past, when Catholic Church districts helped shape how communities were organized.
In 1807, the Territory of Orleans established 19 civil parishes, borrowing heavily from earlier church boundaries. The old counties didn’t disappear immediately, but over time, parishes became Louisiana’s equivalent of counties. Take Orleans Parish, home to the French Quarter. In 1805, it was organized as Orleans County, but just two years later, the territorial legislature established Orleans Parish, beginning Louisiana’s transition from counties to parishes.
For title professionals, that history has a practical impact. Knowing which parish records to search and how to follow an older chain of ownership can make all the difference when researching a property.
At Real Title Services, we help clients trace property ownership through public records in Louisiana and nationwide. Sometimes, understanding a property’s present starts with knowing a little about its past.
